Room-temperature water bottles are the gold standard for beginners — cheap, safe, satisfying. Clear 10 feet in every direction, wear eye protection, and cut through the bottle, not at it. Power comes from the hips, not the arms.
First 100 cuts: bottles and pool noodles, focused on edge alignment. 100-500: multiple bottles and tatami mats. 1000+: combination cuts, speed, precision. Technique beats strength — a 120-pound person with good form outcuts a 250-pound person with bad form.
Wipe, oil, check, store — five minutes after every session. Light mineral oil or choji oil, never WD-40. A cared-for sword outlasts its owner; a neglected one rusts in weeks.
When you're ready, a custom sword is a relationship, not a transaction: spec sheet, 4-12 week lead time (8-16 typical), progress photos at forge, heat-treat, and finish. Never pay more than 50% upfront to a maker without a track record.
